The Fidelity Closed End Mutual Funds are investments that are sold on the open market by those that hold them. That advantage and the fact that most have lower fees than open end mutual funds is an alluring attraction for investors.
Companies like Fidelity offer these types of funds to raise capital quickly by selling limited number of shares to investors only at the initial offering. To sell these shares the investor must use a broker to sell them on the open market.
One such closed-end fund is the Highland Cap Floating Rate Advantage CL Z. It has a stock ticker of XLAZX. It had a 1 year return of 22.47%, but is closed to new investors. This is common with all closed-end funds. You must find them and invest in them during the initial offering.
There are two closed end Mutual funds being offered at the present time by Fidelity. They are the EMRCX and GHAAX.
The EMRCX is the Van Eck Emerging Markets CL C fund that had a one year return of 135.82%. This fund is made up of mostly foreign stocks mostly out of Asia but there is also investment in Latin America. There are a total of 108 stocks in this fund with an annual turnover rate of 63%.
